## How to Value a Classic Car

1. **Pin down the exact car.** Model year, trim, body style, transmission, and engine can each move value more than condition. Compare against the same configuration, not just the same nameplate.
2. **Find completed sales, not asking prices.** Dealer listings show what sellers hope to get. Completed auction results show what buyers actually paid. Unsold lots that missed reserve are not prices.
3. **Narrow by year and mileage.** Use the estimator on each model page to filter comparable sales to your model year and mileage band, then read the range rather than a single number.
4. **Adjust for condition and history.** Originality, documentation, restoration quality, color, options, and provenance explain most of the spread between individual results.
5. **Check the trend.** Each model's price-history page shows how its median sale price has moved year by year, so you can tell whether older comps still apply.

## Frequently Asked Questions

**Q: How do I find the value of a classic car?**

Start from completed auction sales of the same model and model year, narrow them to similar mileage, then adjust for condition, originality, and documentation. Choose your make and model above to open an estimator built on those comparable sales.

**Q: Is this classic car value estimator free?**

Yes. Every make and model page, value estimator, and price-history report is free to use. Developers can query the same data through the Old Cars Data API or MCP server.

**Q: How is this different from a classic car price guide?**

Price guides publish condition-graded values set by editors. Old Cars Data reports what cars actually sold for at auction, with links to the original results, so you can see the evidence behind every number. The two are complementary: a guide gives a reference point, completed sales show the current market.

**Q: Does Kelley Blue Book value classic cars?**

Kelley Blue Book is built for everyday used vehicles and does not cover most older collector cars. For classics, completed auction results are the most direct evidence of market value.

**Q: Where does the auction data come from?**

Completed results from Bring a Trailer, Cars & Bids, Hemmings, AutoHunter, Hagerty, PCAR Market, All Collector Cars, Gooding & Co, RM Sotheby's, Barrett-Jackson, Sotheby's Motorsport, Car & Classic, The Market, Broad Arrow, MB Market, Mecum Auctions, PistonHeads, Collecting Cars, and Bonhams, refreshed every 15 minutes.
