## Authentication

Most endpoints require an API key passed as a Bearer token:

The `/makes` and `/models` endpoints are public and do not require authentication. They return normalized names for make/model browsing on `GET /auctions` and MCP `search_auctions`. For `get_price_stats`, `make` is still required. You can also search auctions by exact `vin` or `seller_username` without `make`.

## Rate Limits

All REST and MCP requests have a rolling burst limit of **250 requests per 60 seconds**. The limit applies per API key, per account for OAuth, and per IP address for unauthenticated public endpoints. Public reference endpoints and MCP discovery tools count toward this burst limit even when they do not consume monthly quota.

Burst-limit headers:
- `X-BurstRateLimit-Limit` — Requests allowed in the 60-second window
- `X-BurstRateLimit-Remaining` — Requests remaining in the window
- `X-BurstRateLimit-Reset` — Unix timestamp when capacity becomes available
- `Retry-After` — Seconds to wait before retrying; returned with HTTP 429

The burst limit is separate from the following plan quotas.

**Do not count toward the query limit:** `GET /makes`, `GET /models`, and MCP `list_makes` / `list_models` when they are the only tool invocations in that HTTP request. If one MCP request batches multiple tools and any call is metered (e.g. `search_auctions`), the whole request counts as one metered call.

**Counted:** `GET /auctions`, `GET /auctions/live`, `GET /auctions/{auction_id}/bids`, `GET /stats`, MCP `search_auctions`, MCP `search_live_auctions`, MCP `get_auction_bids`, MCP `get_price_stats`, and other MCP JSON-RPC traffic (e.g. protocol handshake).

**Workflow (make/model search):** Discover makes via `GET /makes` or `list_makes`, then models via `GET /models?make=...` or `list_models`, then search auctions with those exact strings. For VIN or seller lookups, call `GET /auctions` with `vin` or `seller_username` directly.

Plan-quota headers on authenticated responses:
- `X-RateLimit-Limit` — Maximum metered requests allowed
- `X-RateLimit-Remaining` — Remaining metered requests in the billing window
- `X-RateLimit-Reset` — Timestamp when the rate limit resets

### GET /makes

List all available vehicle makes. Public, no authentication required. Does not count toward plan query limits. Use these strings as the `make` parameter on `GET /auctions`.

### GET /auctions

Search auction results with filters. Requires authentication. Counts toward your plan query limit. Starter plan limited to 20 results.

**Query modes:** (1) **Make/model** — provide `make` (and optionally `model`) using normalized values from `GET /makes` and `GET /models`. (2) **VIN** — provide `vin` only (exact raw match); `make` not required. (3) **Seller** — provide `seller_username` only (exact match); `make` not required. You must supply at least one of `make`, non-empty `vin`, or non-empty `seller_username`. Other filters combine with any mode.

`auction_end_at` does not identify an instant that can safely be converted between timezones. Do not append `Z` or assume UTC. Old Cars Data does not add buyer premiums, taxes, or fees to `price` during normalization, but a source may publish a result that already includes them. There is no public per-record premium indicator; use `source` and `url` to verify the original listing when the distinction matters.

Use this endpoint for current-market context, ending-soon views, polling active listings, and comparing live bidding against completed-sale comps from `GET /auctions`.

Live auction responses include the normalized auction fields from `GET /auctions`, plus current listing signals such as active status, current bid or price where available, bid count, and ending window fields.

Timestamp response fields preserve stored wall-clock values in `YYYY-MM-DD HH:mm:ss[.ffffff]` format. They do not include a UTC offset; do not append `Z` or assume UTC. Timestamp filter inputs require ISO 8601 values with an offset.

### GET /auctions/{auction_id}/bids

Retrieve paginated bid history for supported Bring a Trailer, Cars & Bids, Hemmings, Hagerty, PCAR Market, All Collector Cars, and Sotheby's Motorsport auctions where bid data is available. Requires authentication. Counts toward your plan query limit.

Use the `id` returned by `GET /auctions` or `GET /auctions/live` as `auction_id`. Bid history helps agents and pricing tools explain demand intensity, bidding cadence, and late-auction behavior.

For a per-minute limit, use the `Retry-After` response header before retrying. A 429 whose message refers to a plan limit instead resets at the billing-period timestamp in `X-RateLimit-Reset`.

## MCP (Model Context Protocol) Server

Connect AI tools like Codex, ChatGPT, Claude, and Cursor to Old Cars Data. The MCP server exposes the same data as the REST API through natural language tool calls.

**Recommended flow:** `list_makes` → `list_models` (with a make from that list) → `search_auctions` with the same canonical `make` / `model` strings. `list_makes` and `list_models` do not count toward your query limit when they are the only tools in that MCP HTTP request (same rules as REST reference endpoints).

**Auth:** OAuth browser sign-in (recommended). API-key bearer auth is available only as a fallback for clients without remote MCP OAuth support.

### Setup

Add the endpoint to a client, then use its Connect, Authenticate, or Login action. The client opens the Old Cars Data sign-in page in a browser and asks the user to approve access. Do not add an authorization header when the client supports OAuth.
